2011: Sales in the chemical industry

Posted by admin On May - 4 - 2011

The 11th of April Solvay announced its intention to buy Rhodia for €3 billion. This is the last announcement in a long list of acquisitions in the chemical industry in a year that is breaking records. The number of acquisitions is motivated by a market recovering from the economic crisis and that has cash again after 3 years of strong readjustment measures. Solvay buys Rhodia Specialty polymers of Solvay. Source: Solvay The main products of Brussels based Solvay are sodium carbonate, hydrogen peroxide and specialty polymers. It employs 16,800 people in over 40 countries and in 2010 its consolidated sales were €7.1 billion. The sale of its pharma business for €4.5 billion to Abbott was finalised. This sale focused the rest of the business in the chemicals sector and it has probably facilitated Rhodia’s acquisition. Rhodia employs 14,000 people worldwide and in 2010 its sales amounted to €5.23 billion. Its internal structure is a bit complicated, with 5 clusters and 11 business...

FEITCAP: A new Spanish trade association is born

Posted by admin On December - 29 - 2009

ANAIP, the Spanish trade association for plastic professionals and COFACO, a consortium of companies transforming rubber, just signed the Foundational Act of the FEITCAP or Federación Española de Industriales de la Transformación de Caucho y Plásticos. ANAIP y COFACO are two of the oldest trade associations in Spain, with 53 and 61 years of existence each. Their decision to join forces has been motivated by the need to reduce the effect of the economic downturn in one of the most important manufacturing sectors in Spain. Plastic and rubber manufacturing decreased by 17% during the first 9 months of 2009. This has to be added to the 12% drop already registered by the segment during 2008. The recently created federation, FEITCAP, represents more than 4,450 companies that directly employ 118,000 people. Its volume of business in 2008 was over 19,000 million euros, i.e 1.8% of Spanish GDP. José Antonio de la Cruz, former President of ANAIP will be the first to preside FEITCAP and José...

2009 International Year of Natural Fibres

Posted by admin On April - 30 - 2009

The FAO has declared 2009 International Year of Natural Fibres. Within natural fibres we can find materials as important for humanity as wool, cotton or flax, key in our development through history. They are used in a variety of markets, to produce textiles, paper and composite materials. The benefits of their production, sales and export significantly help farmers in deprived areas to secure an income, a rare advantage over other crops and lines of work. For this reason, mundomaterial wants to promote through 2009 the use of natural fibres in their many applications. 2009 has been declared by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations,FAO, the International Year of Natural Fibres. With this initiative FAO aims at promoting the use of natural fibres of animal and vegetal origin. Modern manmade synthetic fibres, like nylon, polyester or acrylic fibres are obviously not included. Other natural fibres sourced from trees are not included, as they will be promoted in 2011,...

Expoquimia – first impressions

Posted by admin On October - 31 - 2008

The 20th of October I attended Expoquimia, Equiplast and Eurosurfas in Barcelona (I wish they had just one name, it would save us all so much time!). For those of you unaware of them, these are 3 trade fairs in 1 for the chemical industry. Amongst them these first impressions and some constructive criticism, new applications for paper and strange vehicles. I still need to write about biodegradable, compostable and renewable plastics, together with short profiles of the companies that attended meetings on biodegradable plastics. I’ve found many materials that surprised me and interested me, together with processing equipment, environmental claims and other curiosities. Truly exhausting, since I squeezed it in 2 days, but well worthy. AKPC_IDS += "1705,";
